Lascaux Cave is a Palaeolithic cave located near the village of Montignac in the Dordogne region, where there are some of the world’s most famous examples of prehistoric cave paintings. Approximately 600 paintings are found on the walls of the cave where many types of animals are depicted, such as horses, deer, bison, and more. These artworks date to c. 17,000 – c. 15,000 BCE. Lascaux was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1979, along with other prehistoric sites in its proximity. The website for the museum, The International Centre for Cave Art is worth checking out.
